Task 1
For each of the following statements, decide how far you agree or disagree with that statement and mark your answer in an appropriate place along the cline on the right.
People mostly learn by doing.
Language learning is not very different from learning
other subjects, for example at university.
The teacher’s main role is to share knowledge with the
students and to ensure they can recall that knowledge.
The teacher’s main role is to set up activities in which
students can learn for themselves.
Games are essential to an engaging language
classroom.
Coursebooks need to be adapted to suit each particular
group of students.
Students should finish learning the alphabet before trying
to learn words and phrases.
It is just as important to develop students’ listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills as it is to develop their lexis, grammar
and pronunciation.
It typically takes about 2 years to learn a language like a
native speaker.
Language learners eventually need to learn to speak as
well as native speakers.

In 200-300 words, describe a learning situation that you can remember being in that involved someone else as your tutor, instructor or mentor (eg. a convenor at university; a language teacher; a colleague introducing you to a procedure or technique at work; a friend helping you with a new computer programme; etc).
