Structures 1. be able to do sth. 1) 概念：be able to表示“能，会(做)某事”，在表示能力时和can可以通用。但与can相比，be able to具有各种时态的不同形式，还可与除了can以外的各种情态动词连用，主语一般有生命。 2) 例句： (1) Are you able to speak English fluently? = Can you speak English fluently? (2) My father was able to swim when he was only four. = My father could swim when he was only four. (3) He wont be able to take part in the next sports meeting. 注意: be able to 的过去时was / were able to常表示“成功做到……”，即succeeded in doing sth. 或managed to do sth.的意思，这时它和could不能通用。例如： Although the man had little money, he was able to finish his trip by asking for free lifts. = Although the man had little money, he managed to finish his trip by asking for free lifts. = Although the man had little money, he succeeded in finishing his trip by asking for free lifts. 虽然那个人没什么钱，但他还是用请求免费搭车的方法完成了他的旅程。 2. ought to do sth. 表示“应该做某事”，相当于should do sth.，例如： You ought to listen to your teachers carefully.
