1.0 Introduction
Jack London (1876-1916) is a very popular and prolific American novelist and short story writer in the first years of the twentieth century. Martin Eden, a famous autobiographical novel written by Jack London, depicts a low-class young man making great “success” to advance him into the upper class, while suffering deep loneliness.
For a long time, critics in the world differed in their evaluation of Martin Eden. Many readers and scholars analyze the book from different perspectives. Some try to understand it in Nietzscheen approach; some find out Naturalist ideas reflected in it; some see the disillusion of American dream in the work; some analyze it in the feminist point of view; some compare Martin Eden with The Great Gatsby in the approach of the plot structures and narrative discourse; etc.
However, most critics pay their attention to the work itself or its background information. There are few articles that analyze the main character Martin Eden’s loneliness. However, we can find the severe influence of his feeling of loneliness and the factors that contribute to his death through analyzing this young man’s experiences. First, his family members can not understand him, and they want him to be realistic and rational to get a job which is corresponding to his social status. Second, his fellows of the working class could not understand him. Brissenden, the only one true friend of Martin, the spiritual guider of Martin, commits suicide when Martin goes to his room. Brissenden’ s suicide makes Martin get bogged down loneliness totally. Finally, he has been rejected by the upper class since the every beginning. Ruth, his lover, never understands and supports him. What is worse, at the key moment, when Martin Eden needs her comfort and encouragement, she gives up and betrays him. And the publishers, the representative of that society, at first refuse his works again and again. While, they rush to flatter him when Martin’s works becomes popular with
