Realia and visuals Show real objects or pictures, diagrams and maps to your learners and explain meanings or connection of meanings. 2. Word-building (word formation rules and common affixes) Use parts of words to help learners build words or guess their meaning (e.g. change the meaning of an adjective by putting a prefix in front of it.) 3. Matching Learners match words to words (e.g. synonyms or opposite) or sentences (e.g. definitions) or pictures. 4. Guessing from context Use the context surrounding a word to guess its meaning. 5.
