Teaching plan of Chapter Seven
Traditional jobs
Chapter topic overview:
The main topic of this chapter istraditional questions. The main passage is a factual description of an old cormorant fisherman, who uses the big birds to catch fish. The Listening section describes another traditional skill: cutting pictures from paper using scissors.The Language section teaches students about the passive voice. The Speaking section focuses on describing people. The Writing section asks students to describe another traditional occupation, that of the dough sculptor.
Pre-chapter activities:
Ask Ss if they know any traditional occupations or skills which are disappearing in China as it develops and becomes more modern.
There are many examples. Some skills are very old, such as spinning and weaving by hand, and they are replaced by modern factories.
Ironically, tourism sometimes revives some traditional skills and crafts, and places such as tourist resorts employ people to sit and perform ancient crafts to entertain the tourists.
In general, it is rather sad that some of these old occupations are disappearing, but it is difficult to stop progress. Discuss some of these issus with students and then move on to the passage.

Teaching target
1. To have a warm-up to know about some traditional skills.
To know some new words about the reading passage.
Cartoon talk
Give students some time to look at the cartoon on SB A, page 86. Tell them to read the sentences carefully.
Study the picture:
Hi: There are lots of fish here, Lo!
Lo: Yes. I’ll put a cross here, so well know the place next time!
2. Meaning of the cartoon:
This cartoon shows our two characters enjoying some successful fishing in the harbour. Lo decides to put a cross on the boat to mark the spot. Since the boat will move away from that place, his idea will obviously not work! The cartoon introduces the topic of fishing in the Reading passage.
