Stylistic analysis and translation of Robert Frost’s The road not taken Stylistic analysis and translation of Robert Frost’s The road not taken 2.Lexical-level stylistic features 诗人使用浅显易懂的语言,甚至是传统意义上“不应该”出现在诗歌中的口语如:perhaps, somewhere 之类的词,这使这首诗风格清新,把深刻的哲理寓于简洁、朴实的诗句中。 3.Semantic-level stylistic features Pun: Then took the other, as just as fair Fair 既有“公平” 又有“美丽”的意思。 4.Syntactic-level stylistic features 1).repetition:第一节中用了三个and突出诗人在面对两条路要做出选择时的犹豫、徘徊的复杂的心路历程;第四节中somewhere ages and ages hence,两个ages 和之前的sigh表达了多年后,回首往事时的叹息; 第一节和第四节重复Two roads diverged in a yellow wood表明诗人在回首往事的时候,感慨当初的选择,也坚定了继续走下去的决心。 2).marked theme: long I stood,诗歌中的标记主位通常把副词提前,这里既考虑到押韵,也突出了诗人面临两种选择时的困惑和犹豫。 5.Imagery and symbolism 诗中大量使用了视觉意象:diverged road; yellow wood; undergrowth; grassy road等。 “意象”是诗歌的灵魂,是诗歌独特的表达方式,它能唤起读者的暗示于诗歌中的感情色彩,使读者能沿着意象所指引的方向进入诗的意境。本诗中的这些意象使读者联想到“the choices in life; the middle age; the mysteries or frustration”. “路”是本诗中最重要的意象,这一意象在中西方文化中都经常被用来比喻“人生”。本诗正是运用了这种“意象—隐喻—象征”的写作手法表达了对人生的看法。We can infer from the poem that life is like a journey filled with twists and turns.
