Listening Discussion 1. You are going to hear three students talking about choosing a career. What do you expect they will discuss? 2. One of the students gets in touch with a careers adviser. What do you think a careers adviser does? A: I expect the three students will discuss their ideas and suggestions, their dreams of future jobs and their present situations. I think a careers adviser is a person who gives advice to someone on how to choose a good job and he or she is paid for this kind of service. B: I expect them to talk about their future career plans, their trouble and anxiety, or maybe the disagreement to their parents’ opinions. I think a careers adviser often ask and answer questions for the customers, therefore he or she can help people solve a variety of problems until they finally find the suitable jobs. This kind of person will be more popular in the future and is sure to make a lot of money for their good service. Listening The expectation of Sally: The expectation of Diana’s parents: The reason for James’ calling: The types of job in the world: The time of James’ appointment: The way James found the service: The likes of James: The job suitable for him: Listening Text D: What sort of job do you want? J: That’s my problem: I really have no idea. Do you know what you want to do? S: Yes, I want to teach primary school kids. I love children at that age and it’s so interesting to help them learn. J: How about you, Diana? D: Well, Mum and Dad are both accountants, and they want me to follow in their footsteps. S: You’d be great at that, you are so good at maths. D: Yeah, I would like to work with numbers, but I don’t think I want to have a desk job ─ you know, be in an office 9 to 5, five days a week. I enjoy being outdoors, or at least not stuck in one place all the time. S: Mmn … I wonder what you could do… R: Well, don’t worry. I’m sure we can help. There are about 40,000 different jobs in the world, so there must be one that suits you. I
