The 200-year period saw a big rise in greenhouse gases. The discovery challenges the UN view that man-made climate change only began around 1800. Celia Sapart of Utrecht University in the Netherlands and his team studied the record of the atmosphere trapped in Greenlands ice and found the level of heat-trapping methane(甲烷) rose about 2,000 years ago and stayed at that higher level for about two centuries. Methane was probably released during deforestation(砍伐树林) to clear land for farming and from the use of charcoal (木炭) as fuel, for instance to melt metal to make weapons. However, rates of deforestation come to a decrease around 200 AD, as a result of fast population declines in China and Europe following the fall of the Han Dynasty and the decline of the Roman Empire. Sapart estimated that methane given off until 1800 was about 10 percent of the total for the past 2,000 years, with 90 percent since the Industrial Revolution. The findings by Saparts team questioned the view by a UN group of climate scientists that man-made climate change started with the increasing use of fossil fuels(化石燃料) during the Industrial Revolution.“The pre-industrial time was not a natural time for the climate—it was already influenced by human activity，” Sapart said. The scientists noted a second rise in methane in Medieval times, from 800 to 1200, when Europe had an economic success following the Dark Ages.
