NOVEMBER, 2008 FROM: MANAGER TO: ALL EMPLOYEES SUBJECT: FALL PROTECTION PURPOSE: The purpose of the policy is to provide the employee with information required to prevent falls on the job site. There are many areas where the employee must wear fall protection and use other methods to prevent falling. PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR: Manager of Operations has been assigned the administrative responsibility of fall protection policy. GENERAL: SOUTHWESTERN ELECTRICAL CO., INC. will furnish fall protection to minimize the risk of falls. Protection may be accomplished through the design of the facility and/or personal protective equipment. The following are some types of fall protection: * Safety nets * Safety climbs * Safety harness with lanyard(s) * Personnel lifts * Hand rails, midrails, and toe boards on scaffolding CLIMBING AND WORKING AT ELEVATIONS: Fall protections must be used at all times while personnel are working at elevations greater than six (6) feet above the ground or approved work platforms. This is measured by the level of the employees feet. Personnel climbing to or from such working surfaces should use: * A ladder * Stairs * Climbing safety device as required. EXCEPTION. This rule does not apply to personnel on portable or fixed ladders less than 20 feet in length when performing tasks that can be accomplished with only one hand, allowing the other hand to grasp the ladder at all times. FIXED LADDERS: Fixed ladders that are more than 20 feet in length must have: * A fixed climbing cage, or * A climbing device, or * Some other appropriate means of fall protection used by the individual climbing or working on the ladder. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: A full body harness must be worn whenever fall protection is required. Exception: Linemans belts are approved only for qualified personnel who must climb electrical poles. Safety harnesses and linemans belt should fit snugly and comforta
