Conveyance Dynamics and Decelerometer Shaft Inspections Y. D. Jiang T. S. Golosinski Western Australian School of Mines, Australia ABSTRACT: this paper reviews dynamic behaviour of conveyances moving in mine shafts and defines its basic patterns. These patterns are used to develop quantitative shaft wear criteria applicable during decelerometer shaft inspections. 1 INTRODUCTION Several sophisticated methods were developed for periodic shaft inspections and to aid in visual inspections. These methods include use of inclinometers, moving beams, inertial platforms and decelerometer testing (Jiang, Jorgenson and Golosinski 1995). The decelerometer testing is particularly well suited to the shaft inspections since it measures horizontal and vertical accelerations of the conveyance which are considered to be related to forces acting between a moving conveyance and the shaft steelwork. However, the relations in question are complex and difficult to quantify (Thomas and Engelhardt, 1993). Most importantly, the types of problems faced in the inspected shaft can not be readily identified nor can the existing problems be quantified so as to facilitate effective planning of shaft maintenance. The following paper addresses some of these shortcomings. The dynamic behaviour of conveyance travelling in shafts has been studied by a number of researchers, including work of Redpath and Shaver (1977), Galloway and Tiley (1982), Wohlrab (1985), Krige (1986), Pretorius, Mercer and Martin (1988), Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC, 1990), Heyns and Backeberg (1993), Plachno (1991) and others. Most of the past research has dealt with the horizontal forces acting between conveyances and their guides (so called “slamming force”), and little practical information is available on relationships between the results of decelerometer testing and the dynamic behaviour of shaft components. To fill this gap the authors propose three different dynamic models to define the d
