The 3.5-mile passageway connects SEPTA’s Regional Rail lines with local rail and trolley lines and offers underground entrances to buildings along Market and Locust Streets as well as the “MetroMarket” near Suburban Station complete with small shops, eateries and a post office. During the day, you’ll find much of the concourse bustling with activity.Quite a different experience from the one U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Assistant Secretary Dr. Tommy Sowers, U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) Executive Director Barbara Poppe and I had. The three of us joined 125 volunteers on the night of January 30 to walk the concourse and streets to count the number of homeless people seeking shelter from the rain. For a single night during the last 10 days in January, providers in virtually every community across the country collect Point-in-Time (PIT) data on the number and demographics of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The one-night snapshot provides local planners with data they need to understand the number and characteristics of homeless persons. In Region III, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) staffers participated in many of the local counts. You will find more about their experiences throughout this month’s HUDLine News.
