Country Report for 39th Session of Panel on Cyclone Submitted by the MYANMAR Department of Meteorology and Hydrology Meteorological Components Weather Summary During the period of Pre monsoon, there was no cyclone form over Bay of Bengal. Southwest monsoon set in to Southern Myanmar 21 May and retreat from the whole country 9 October 2011. Total monsoon period was observed (126) days. Out of (9) low pressure areas, (4) intensified further into Depression and (1) intensified into very severe cyclonic storm “THANE”. October Depression crossed between Bangladesh and Northern Rakhine Coast on 20 October and flash flood associated with intense rainfalls were observed at the Central Myanmar areas Significant weather events 2011 was significant year for La Nina. 2010-2011 moderate La Nina weakened May 2010 and weak La Nina re-emergence in mid September. Myanmar experienced most of the observatories above normal rain. New Records of Meteorological Parameters 2011 Heaviest annual rainfall was observed (281.34) Inches at Yay station (48107) and lowest annual rainfall was (34.49) Inches at Myingyan station (48047). On 21 July 2011, prolonged heavy rain with new recorded rainfall of (29.10) inches per day was observed at the Taungkok(18N 93E)Coastal mountainous areas of Rakhine State. Highest maximum temperature during 2011 summer was (45 °C) at Chauk station (48052) on 14-5-2011. Lowest minimum temperature was (-4 °C) at Hakha station (48030). Improvement/Upgrading of Meteorological Facilities Multifunctional Satellite Image(MTSAT) ground receiving system and related computer facilities, JMA GSM GRIB data, soft wares, JMA storm surge model, one high accurate digital barometer, technical guidance methods were provided under the Japan International Cooperation Program’s Improvement of Storm Forecasting Project (2010-2012). Meteorological services of DMH were very supported by these tools, on job training to the daily weather forecast
