AN INTERSTING LIFE(1) Bob Geldof is one of the most famous pop stars of the twentieth century. His greatest success has not been in singing but in organizing other singers to sing for himfor free! Bob Geldof was born in Ireland in 1954.His mother died when he was seven. When he was fourteen he became interested in pop groups. He left school and worked first in a food factory and later as a worker buiding roads. He went to Canada where he wrote about music for a newspaper. In 1975 he returned to Dublin, the capital of the Irish Republic, where he formed his own pop group . From 1979 to 1982 they were the top group in Britain, but in 1982 the group stopped playing together. Bob Geldof’s life changed one October evening in 1984 when he was watching TV. He became sad and angry when he saw pictures of hungry people in Africa. He felt that he wanted to do something to help them. Suddenly he has the idea of making a pop record. If they managed to sell lots of copies, then the money from the record sales could be spent on food and other things for Africa. He rang up all his friends in the pop world, including the most famous pop stars. They all agreed to sing on his record for free. The record Do they know it’s Christmas? Was produced and Bob made sure that it was played many time on the radio. So many copies were sold that the factory was producing 320,000 copies of the record every day. In the USA 1.5 million copies were sold in the first fortnight, By January 1985, 5 million pounds had been collected and this soon increased to 8 million pounds (about 80 million yuan). After the success of this record, Bob went to six african countries. He wanted to see for himself what the problems were. He also wanted to see how the money should be spent.
