1 Introduction
It is widely known that English suffixes should be divided into two “classes” according to whether or not they are stress-neutral. Classhood has been captured in the literature in various theoretical ways: e.g., by means of boundary symbols (cf. Chomsky and Halle (1968)), hierarchical strata (cf.
