Application of Lectures in Tertiary Education.doc

Application of Lectures in Tertiary Education Abstract. The lecture is one of the most common teaching methods in tertiary education. It plays an important role in students’ whole process of learning. This paper will discuss the process of lecturing: pre-lecture, during the lecture, and post-lecture. Finally, some recommendations on teaching and learning in lectures are provided. Key words: lecture, tertiary education, tutorial 1 Introduction A traditional lecture is one of the teaching methods in which the lecturer introduces a topic and delivers the information about it. Students listen to the lecture and may take some notes. They are also expected to develop their understanding and skills in the post-lecture activities, especially in the tutorial [10]. The lecture is listed among the most common teaching method by Cox [5]. Burdess also claims that the lecture is “a very common teaching method in tertiary education” and “will continue to be a major teaching method”[4] Lectures have many functions in the process of learning. As students in Saunders et al’s (1969) study said that the major functions of lectures are “to impart information, to provide a framework for the course, to indicate methods of approaching the subject, to indicate sources of reference and to stimulate independent work”[1]. Students of the Royal Dental Hospital School of Dental Surgery listed three functions of lectures: “to introduce the subject and set it in its context, to bring the text-book up to date, and to provide discussion of problems and the possible solutions”[1]. This paper will discuss the process of lecturing which is divided into three parts: pre-lecture, during the lecture, and post-lecture. In the pre-lecture part, the preparations of lecturers and students will be talked about. Then, how lectures are produced and what students need to do during the lectures is the main part of this paper. Tutorial as the complement to the lecture will be briefly discussed
