TURN YOUR DOBSONIAN MOUNT INTO A PRECISION ALT/AZIMUTH MOUNT The Dobsonian Mount The Dobsonian mount is a great device to hold your Newtonian light bucket for general night sky viewing.. It is simple, relatively light and easily transported to your favourite dark sky location. Its only limitation in this use is that it needs to be nudged along by hand as you follow the rotating celestial sphere. This is not usually a problem with low magnification wide field views but can become a nuisance as you increase magnification. The mounts come in many different variations from the well made and solid plywood type to the simple chipboard type supplied with the cheaper commercial large aperture telescopes. If you have one of these it will need to be reinforced with corner stays and the bases of the rocker box and mounting board will need to be strengthened with extra sheets of 18 mm plywood otherwise they will be too flimsy to withstand serious modification. But with a little work and ingenuity they can all be converted into stable and formidable alt/azimuth mounts that can be motor driven to allow accurate tracking of celestial objects. The main problem of the mounts is the bearings and the orthogonal accuracy of the two planes of operation. Both of these can be greatly improved with some careful reworking and minor machining and when this is done the addition of an electronic control device such as a Dob Driver 11 can make a simple telescope into a very satisfactory computer controlled alt/azimuth mounted telescope. To give an idea of what can be done I will attempt to describe the modifications I did to my old eight inch Newtonian which was mounted in a kit Dobsonian mount, purchased some years back as a stop gap while I made a German equatorial mount.
