LCS recoveries for all the analytes on the target analyte lists were pooled, and statistical analyses (such as outlier tests and analysis of variance) were performed on the data before generating the final LCS control limits (LCS-CLs). A complete description of the methodology and findings for Method 8270 can be found in the Laboratory Control Sample Pilot Study (DoD, 2000). Environmental testing laboratories that perform work for DoD must utilize the DoD-specified LCS-CLs when assessing batch acceptance whenever they are available. This appendix presents the control limits generated by the LCS study and the methodology for applying the limits to LCS data. All analytes spiked in the LCS shall meet the DoD-generated LCS control limits. As described in Section D.1.1.2.1.e of NELAC Appendix D, a number of sporadic marginal exceedances are allowed. Depending on the length of the list of analytes, a specified small number of analytes may exceed the generated control limit. Upper and lower marginal exceedance (ME) limits, calculated at 4 standard deviations around the mean, are established to mark the boundaries of marginal exceedances.
