The growth of this reef, as well as the development of thick basin deposits and a series of backreef deposits, has resulted in a world-class geologic classroom. Geologists from around the world come to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park to study backreef-reef-basin sequences, carbonate shelf formation, evaporite basins, and the fascinating caves that form in these soluble rocks.
