UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN CE 394K GIS in Water Resources Daniela Ortiz de Montellano December 9, 2005 FLOODING IN SOUTH FLORIDA INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES DATA SOURCES METHODOLOGY RESULTS AND ANALYSIS CONCLUSION INTRODUCTION Background The state of Florida is a peninsula located in the southeast United States, protruding into the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, /webimage/countrys/namerica/usstates/fl.htm This paper studies the flooding potential of south Florida. Flood events could be due to storm surge, river flooding, global warming, or heavy rainfall. Florida is characterized with low-elevation terrain. In addition, the land is made of impermeable limestone bedrock, which creates a land highly susceptible to flooding. Florida has two issues that contribute to the flooding possibilities. First, the low elevation of the land is not enough to naturally pull the water away. Next, the limestone bedrock make it difficult to drain accumulated water, and the combined result is that excess water in the water bodies can overflow and cause flooding (1). On October 4 2000, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared the southern Florida on emergency state due to severe storms and flooding. The areas affected were the counties Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, Collier, and the Florida Keys. The environmental events mentioned above can cause flooding in one way or the other. Severe flooding can cause property damage and death(2). In Florida, environmental engineers have designed and proposed a complex system to improve drainage and to protect lives and property(3) I selected the effect of storm surges on south Florida to study the effects of flooding on the south Florida region. Objectives My objective is to use Geographic Information System (GIS) software to create maps of south Florida to: Help predict and estimate the area and volume of potential flooding Estimate the impact of flooding on size population Compare the flooding
