It has the potential to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with chronic wounds, is an alternative treatment modality when other conventional treatments fail or if patients are unable to undergo surgery. Appropriate use of this therapy has the potential to reduce length of hospital stay, reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections and improve patients’ quality of life. STATUS Clinical Guideline PURPOSE This guideline has been developed to support nurses to manage a wide variety of wounds using VAC therapy appropriately and safely at all Competency Levels. SCOPE/AUDIENCE This guideline applies to all healthcare professionals who have been deemed competent to apply VAC therapy on the QA site within the Surgical division, Dept of Critical Care, Renal Unit.
