Governance and Administration * The 9th and last area Continuous renewal contains only one standard that requires institutions to have processes to continuously renew itself by regular review and rectification of identified deficiencies. HMU’s willingness to undertake this assessment was one of the reasons that enabled HMU to get double ticks for both basic and quality standards. I now will summarise the main strengths and weaknesses we identified at HMU * We identified many Major Strengths of HMU . They included: Well qualified and committed staff Bright hard working students, Excellent teaching facilities especially clinical skills laboratories Excellent research programs, Dedicated medical education unit under direction of Dean Supportive and receptive institutional leadership * HMU acknowledged i many of its weaknesses in its self assessment report . Here they are formulated as a series of recommendations for HMU to consider. They included Encourage more active student learning methods: Reduce time allocated to didactic teaching: Better horizontal integration of disciplines in each year : More vertical integration of themes between years: Assessment methods should encourage problem solving and integrated learning: Assessment should emphasize application of knowledge, skills and attitudes to patient oriented issues rather than factual recall. I do not propose to go into further detail which is contained in the written report.
