DIRECTORATE OF RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT 2010 WSU INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE 18 -20 AUGUST 2010 FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS VENUE: MTHATHA HEALTH RESOURCE CENTRE, MTHATHA, EASTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is organizing an international research conference. Conference theme: CONSOLIDATING RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS FOR A KNOWLEDGE- BASED ECONOMY Preamble The African continent is faced with scientific, technological and management challenges more than any other continent. The AIDS epidemic in Africa continues to grow, and has now been declared the number one development issue on the continent. The UNAIDS 2005 Fact Sheet on Africa presents alarming statistics. Focussing on the Millennium Development Goals; which are: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal education; promote gender equality and employ women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development; the conference aims to consolidate research, innovation and technology platforms that propel the projection of a knowledge-based economy. Last year, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) hosted an International Symposium on HIV/AIDS, Medicinal Plants, and Geophagia. It also organised its research conference on: Advancing knowledge for empowerment through innovations in research. The 2010 conference will serve as a dissemination outlet for various research findings. The 2010 WSU International Research Conference shall be characterised by plenary sessions in which leading scholars and researchers shall present on specialised aspects related to research, innovation and technology; and panel discussions on overcoming challenges faced in conducting research, and enhancing research outputs; breakaway sessions on HIV/AIDS, Biomedical Sciences, Education and Humanities, Mathematical and Physical Sciences,
