Foundations of Physical Hydrology. Regional Processes in a Global Context Geological Sciences 58 Environmental Studies 58 Provisional Course Syllabus Fall ‘07 Semester I; 2007-2008 Synopsis: A qualitative introduction to the underlying causes of floods, droughts, wildfires, and hurricanes in the context of environmental processes driven by the unique character of water, and by its regional abundance or scarcity. This course lays the foundations for understanding the physical mechanisms by which water is transported throughout a hydrologic system, emphasizing the fundamental inter-coupling of atmospheric, surface, soil and ground water. While providing background for future studies, it is primarily designed to enable informed citizens to thoughtfully critique water management practices and public policy. Pre-college math and physics background is expected. Version: August 30, 2007 John F. Hermance (“Jack”) Professor of Geophysics Department of Geological Sciences Brown University Providence, RI 02912-1846 Office: Room 167 Geo/Chem Building 324 Brook Street Tel.: 401-863-3830 Fax: 401-863-2058 e-mail: John_Hermance@Brown.Edu Course Description “Hydrology” is the study of water in all of its manifestations, and the impact of global, regional and local water processes on natural and human events – past, present and future. This course is directed to students at all levels in the humanities, social sciences, political sciences and environmental sciences who wish to develop a fundamental background in how water moves through the environment; the nature of water, and how water affects and is affected by landforms, climate, wildfires and a variety of other natural and anthropogenic forcing terms. Lectures, labs, student discussions, reports and projects on the tools and consequences of hydrologic investigations will consider environmental, social, cultural, political and historical examples of water-related events and phenomena in the context
