Period 4 Listening
The General Idea of This Period:
This period aims at listening to three stories:the story of Atlanta,Phidippides’ journey to ask for help and the passing of the Olympic torch.When accomplishing the listening tasks,train the students’ two skills—predicting the content of the listening texts by looking through the questions before listening and understanding general idea and getting detailed information by catching some key words and sentences.
Teaching Aims:
Make sure the students get the beginning(cause),development and result of the three stories and write down some key words and sentences.
Teaching Important Point:
Get the students to understand the three stories.
Teaching Difficult Point:
Understanding the listening materials.
Teaching Methods:
1.Listening-and-answering.
2.Cooperative learning.
Teaching Aids:
1.A tape recorder.
2.A projector.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1 Revision
Revise the first part of the story of Atlanta.
T:Yesterday we learned part of the story of Atlanta.Remember?
Ss:Yes.
T:Who was Atlanta?
Ss:She was a Greek princess.
T:Good.What was she good at?
S1:She was good at running.She could even run faster than men in Greece.
T:What did she want to do in the story?
S2:She wanted to marry a man who can run faster than her.
T:Why?
S3:Because she was angry at the fact that women were not allowed to take part in the ancient Olympic Games.
T:Did any man come to compete against her?
S4:Yes.And among the men there was one named Hippomenes.
T:Was he sure to win Atlanta?
Ss:No.
T:So what did he do in order to beat her?
S5:He went to the Greek Goddess of Love to ask for help.
T:Did the Goddess help him?
S6:Yes.She gave him three golden apples to attract Atlanta’s attention.
T:Do you think Hippomenes would win the race and marry Atlanta?
Ss:Yes/No.
T:Some say yes some say no.Let’s listen and find out.
Step 2 Listening to the first listening material (Page 15)
1.Predicting the result of the story and getting the general idea.
