It is the trauma of bewilderment which people find themselves in when they are isolated in an alien culture. ????文化冲击指在大量地收到一种异文化的信息之后，尤其身处异国，不同程度地产生的一种心理反应。这是因为失去自己原有熟悉的社会信号和符号，对于对方的社会符号不熟悉，而产生的深度焦虑症。 Learning Guide Content of the Unit This unit focuses on cultural differences of people’s behaviors of hospitality, modesty, politeness and privacy. Many cases and articles are offered in this unit to ask the students read and think further about how different values in influence the quality of people’s communication, especially cross-culutual communication. The analyses on those of cross-cultural communications are very helpful to make students be aware of what’s gone wrong , which are problems of communicative competence rather than language competence. So students of English majors should understand that learning the language is learning the culture. It is not enough just to recite the new words and phrases, learn the grammar rules by heart. One has to be very observant and keen about the cultural difference and tries to adjust oneself to the target culture if in a necessary situation. This unit also discusses the different stages of acculturation, providing the knowledge of culture shock and how to deal with it . Finally a long article of analysis on value of individualism in Western societies and value of collectivism of Eastern societies offers students another chance to dig deeper than just doing cases to understand further that people’s behaviors in any soiciety are governed by traditions of thei
