Period Five Cultural corner; Task; Module File The General Idea of This Period This period contains three parts, that is, Cultural Corner, Task and Module File. The first part is a passage mainly about the differences between quality newspapers and popular newspapers in Britain and the United States. In the course of reading the Ss should consciously compare the differences between quality newspapers and popular newspapers in Britain and the United States, while the teacher can provide them with a chart in which they give them some information about the British newspapers. At last carry out a discussion among Ss: what are the main differences between quality newspapers and popular newspapers in Britain and the United States. The second part is Task, which aims at teaching how to write about your favorite newspaper or magazine. This is group work. They should gather and decide what to write. At the end of the class teachers can summarize what they have learned in this module. If time permits, teachers may offer some exercises in relation to the knowledge of this module to have a consolidation. Teaching Aims 1) Important words or phrases: be divided into, concentrate on, financial, found, be similar to, tabloid, the quality press, the popular press 2) Difficult sentences: (1) They have large headlines, a lot of big photographs and concentrate on news and events about famous people, and news about the British royal family. (长难句) (2) In the United States, newspapers usually have the name of the city where they are produced.(定从Teaching Methods 1) Encourage the Ss to check what they have learned often. 2) Explanations to make Ss master the language points in the passage. 3) Comparative method to help the Ss know more about the differences between quality newspapers and popular newspapers in Britain and the United States. 4) Skimming to get the general idea of the passage. 5) Pair work or group work to finish the task.
