Module 5 Newspapers and Magazines Period One Introduction; Reading and Vocabulary The General Idea of This Period This period includes Introduction as well as Reading and Vocabulary. Introduction can serve as a warming up of the passage. To make Ss fully prepared for the study of the passage, the teacher may encourage Ss to speak out as many vocabularies in relation to newspapers and magazines as they can, which appear in Reading and Vocabulary. The reading test is a piece of news which mainly represents to us the event in which Yang Liwei, the Chinese Taikonaut, travels in space. It is suggested that Ss should first skim the reading passage and get the general idea of each paragraph and then join them into a short passage. Teaching Aims 1.Know about the vocabularies about newspapers and magazines: article, front page, front cover headline, celebrity, editor, fashion, international, journalist, politics, photographer 2. Develop the Ss’ reading ability and grasp some new words phrases related to exploring the space: Words: astronaut, cosmonaut, Taikonaut, spaceship, orbit, capsule, universe, navigator, telescope Phrases: make an orbit of, take off, in total Teaching Methods 1. Train Ss’ reading skills by dealing with some reading activities. 2. Individual work or pair work to get every student to participate in class. 3. Explanations to make Ss master some language points. 4. Fast reading to make Ss get the main idea of the passage. Teaching Important Points 1. Help Ss make sense of the whole passage. 2. Help Ss improve reading ability. 3. Help Ss learn use the vocabularies about exploring space. Teaching Difficult Points 1.Help Ss grasp some reading skills. 2. Teaching Procedures Step 1 Lead-in Before class, teachers may ask Ss to search some English newspapers magazines, and understand the meanings of the newspapers and magazines. What’s more, they should also find out their functions.
