Content
About natural disasters: Get to know about some natural disasters, such as flood, lightening, hurricane, tornado, thunderstorm, earthquake and so on.
Reading:??? Activity 1 on P.22 and Passage 1 on P. 23
Vocabulary: 1. Names of natural disasters presented on P.21 and the new words in Activity 1 on P.22 and Passages 1 on P. 23
2. Words to describe the Gulf Stream and tornados in the two reading passages.
Aims ?
Reading: 1. Get to know about currents from the introduction to the Gulf Stream and find out the connection between weather and currents.
2. Learn the following about tornado from the reading passage:
?????? 1) the definition of tornado
2) places where the violent disaster often happens
3) how violent it is
4) bad results the disaster causes
?????? 3. Learn the skill of finding out something implied in the titles and practise understanding some new words contextually while reading.
Vocabulary: 1. Learn and remember the words to name some kinds of natural disasters presented on P. 21..
????????? 2. Learn the words used to describe currents and tornados from the texts read in this period and try to remember them.

Attitude Development: The desire to know more about natural disasters should be elicited.
Possible difficulties
Getting the meaning of some new words contextually while reading may be difficult for many students, and it must be trained through frequent practice as a required reading skill..

Step 1?? Leading in and preparing (7’)
I. Listen to a news report about the earthquake in Wenchuan to know what they will learn from Module 3 and the new words ‘disaster’ and ‘violent’. (2’)
﹡Teacher’s suggestion: So many people died in Wenchuan earthquake because the shock is violent (very strong).
An earthquake may lead very bad results, so it is a kind of natural disaster. ?
