Ingredient claims include: microorganisms, wetters, enzymes, salt and pH modifiers, buffers, degreasers, etc. They claim to improve the microorganism activity and functioning of the septic system, reduce plugging and increase the effective life of the system. Testimonials abound as to their effectiveness, but little or no hard research data supports the claims. In fact, some products have had detrimental impacts upon the functioning of septic systems! First, there are sufficient microorganisms in household waste to digest organic solids in the septic tank. There is no need to add more. Starters or boosters may add to the population or types of microorganisms, but they have not been shown to effectively make a difference. Save your money – you’ll just be flushing it down the toilet! Secondly, some products contain inert ingredients or through chemical reaction form insoluble precipitates that contribute to the build-up of solids in the tank. If large quantities are regularly added, the system will require more frequent pumping. Finally, with use, indigestible solids accumulate in a septic tank and must be removed periodically to ensure the continual efficient and safe use of the system. Miracle additives do little to stop the build-up of indigestible solids. Septic system owners should not rely upon costly miracle products to keep their systems running smoothly, nor should they allow indigestible solids or toxic chemicals to be flushed down the drain. Periodic pumping of the septic tank and inspection of the systems components is recommended to protect animal and human health and ensure that there is no danger to the environment from a septic system malfunction.
