Germany and the Great War Aims: Examine life in Germany towards the end of the war. Identify the key events during the German Revolution of 1918. Germany After the War After the First World War the history of Germany can be divided into two specific periods of time: Weimar Germany 1919-1933 Democracy Nazi Germany 1933-1945 Dictatorship Communism Everyone is equal and everything is shared. There are no different classes or differences in wealth. There is no private property – the government runs everything for the benefit of the people. Communism is known as a LEFT WING political idea. Russia became the world’s first communist country in 1917. Spartacist Revolution Not everyone was happy with the changes that had taken place in Germany. The Spartacists were a group of Communists. They wanted Germany to be run by soldiers’ and workers’ councils and become a COMMUNIST country. They were led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxembourg. On the 6th January 1919 they tried to seize power by force. Spartacist Revolution The Spartacists took over important government buildings. Ebert, the leader of the Provisional Government sent in ex-soldiers called the FREE CORPS (Freikorps) to attack the Spartacists. Bitter fighting took place in the streets for three days. By 15th January, both Spartacist leaders had been arrested and murdered. * October 28th 1918 Mutiny by sailors at Kiel November 3rd Soldiers take over Kiel naval base. November 6th ‘Soviet Takeover’ Workers and soldier’s councils take over major cities. November 9th General Strike Kaiser abdicates. Republic declared. Provisional Government set up November 11th Armistice signed January 6th 1919 Spartacist Revolution February 6th National Assembly meets at Weimar January 19th National Assembly Elections The German Revolution HAMMER represents the industrial workers and the SICKLE represents the agricultural workers. *
