Which, how and why memory networks combine:A Plasticity of Meaning (PoM) extension to Adaptive Information Processing David Blore Research symposium: EMDR UK I Association Conference: Bristol 2011 Introduction… This presentation on an AIP ‘hypothesis expansion’ was derived from a study which aimed to investigate Positive Psychological Change (PPC) (including PTG) after EMDR for RTA experiences. A 17 page handout has been provided to fully supplement the contents of this presentation An observation… AIP doesn’t provide much information about PPC: “…forging new associations within and between memory networks.” (‘Item 11’ Dworkin 2005, p.224 – see also Solomon Shapiro 2008) …not to be confused with Reduction in Negative Psychological Change (RNPC) e.g. numerous references to “self healing” (e.g. Shapiro 2001, p.55) …so what is the difference between RNPC and PPC ? Approaching the 60th anniversary ofMaslow’s criticism of the ‘negative only’ (i.e. NPC) view of mental health: “The science of psychology has been far more successful on the negative than on the positive side. It has revealed to us much about man’s shortcomings, his illness, his sins, but little about his potentialities, his virtues, his achievable aspirations, or his full psychological height. It is as if psychology has voluntarily restricted itself to only half its rightful jurisdiction, and that, the darker, meaner half.” (Maslow 1954 p.354) Yet… The basic EMDR protocol incorporates, as standard, a positive cognition installation So why isn’t AIP more explicit about PPC? What do we know about what happens as a result of this installation? Not a great deal… partly because: …It is assumed PPC occurs well after the client’s discharge and probably therefore well after the clinician has lost contact with the client …Mainly because to be accepted, EMDR has had to prove it’s ‘negative-reducing’ credentials However, is the assumption correct?
