Unit 21 Spindle of CNC Machine Tools（数控机床主轴 ） Machine Tool Spindles The spindle is a very important and integrated component of different machine tools. Though the spindles are used in different fields and for different purposes, those which are used in machine tools are called machine tool spindles. They are rotating devices used to hold and act as axes for cutting tools or work-pieces on lathes, milling machine and different other machine tools. 主轴是各种机床中很重要的集成组件。尽管主轴用于不同场合也有不同用途，但机床上所用的主轴被称之为机床主轴。主轴是旋转设备，用于支承车床、铣床以及其他机床上刀具或工件，或作为刀具和工具的转轴。 Rotational Accuracy of Spindles At the high cutting speeds and high material removal rates, the spindles carrying the work-piece or the tool are subject to deflection and thrust forces. 在切削速度和材料切除率较高的情形下，携带工件或刀具的主轴容易发生偏斜并受到推力的作用。 文中material removal rate是材料切削率的意思。subject to……可译为“易受……影响”。 To ensure increased stability and minimize torsional strain, the machine spindle is designed to be short and stiff and the final drive to the spindle is located as near to the front bearing as possible. 为了确保提高稳定性并把扭转应变降到最低，机床主轴设计得短且具备刚性，主轴的终端驱动装置安装得尽可能靠近前轴承。 句中as near to the front bearing as possible可译为“尽可能靠近前轴承”。 The rotational accuracy of the spindle is dependent on the quality and design of bearing used. The ball or roller bearings are suitable for high speeds and high loads because of low friction, lower wear rate and lesser liability to incorrect adjustment and ease of replacement when necessary. 主轴的旋转精度取决于所用轴承的设计和质量。由于摩擦小、磨损率低、受校准不当的影响小、易于替换等缘故，滚珠轴承、滚柱轴承适合于高速切削及重载加工。 For efficient service and accuracy the bearings should be of high quality. The vibrations and noise in the spindle can be reduced by using toothed belts and accurate and balanced gears.
