He strikes the Green Knight’s head off, but the Knight picks up his severed head, reiterates his challenge and departs. When the appointed time comes, Sir Gawain sets off to meet him. After a long and hard journey, Sir Gawain comes to a castle and is welled received by its lord and lady. The Lord invites Sir Gawain to go hunting with him, but the Knight prefers to stay at home. The two agree to share in the evening whatever they may have won during the day. This goes on for three days On the first day, the Lord of the castle hunts for a deer, while Sir Gawain is under the lady’s siege to kiss her. The lord is happy to give half of his trophy in the evening to Sir Gawain in return for his brief kiss. The second day ends with the lord giving half a boar for another brief kiss On the third day, her temptations having twice failed, the lady offers Gawain a ring, which he refuses;but when she offers a magic green girdle that will preserve the wearer from death, Gawain, who remembers the giant’s ax so soon to fall on his neck, accepts the girdle as “a jewel for the jeopardy” and promises the lady to keep the gift secret. Here, then, are the two conflicting compacts. When the evening comes, the host returns and offers his game, Gawain returns the kiss but says nothing of the green girdle. Then the day comes to meet the Green Knights blow of Axe. Sir Gawain rides to the Green Chapel in spite of the repeated warning to turn back in the face of death. The chapel is a terrible place in the midst of desolation; and as Gawain approached he hears a terrifying sound of the grating of steel on stone, where the giant is sharpening a new battle-axe.
