Internet Concepts and Ethics A network is a communication system that connects two or more computers and their peripheral devices. The Internet is a large “network of networks.” It connects tens of thousands of networks, millions of computers, and many more millions of users in every country. The Internet is a worldwide network of computers that has emerged as the enabling technology in our migration to a global village. Development of Internet 1969: ARPANET Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Initiated by US Department of Defence. Aim: to establish a robust communication network of distributed computers that could be recovered from disasters or nuclear attacks. It had only four nodes located at various positions in USA. 1972: e-mail 1979: USENET (newsgroup) 1982: TCP/IP 1984: DNS 1986: NSFNet developed; 1989 NSFNet took over ARPANET, operated over a high-speed T1 (1.5Mbps) backbone. 1989 – 1990: WWW (World Wide Web): On it, we can find information in the form of documents, images, audios, videos, etc, connected together through hypertext links. Web pages are written in HTML transmitted using HTTP. 1990s: various web browsers developed – NCSA Mosaic (1993), Netscape Navigator (1994), IE (1995) Service Providers An Internet Service Providers (ISP) is a commercial organisation that provides connection services to the Internet for individuals or companies. An ISP also provides other Internet related services, including e-mail, Web hosting, firewall protection and anti-virus solutions. An ISP connects to a Network Access Point (a major exchange point in the internet) and joins the backbones of the Internet. In HK, many ISPs are interconnected locally through the Hong Kong Internet eXchange (HKIX) to have faster and less expensive access to local sites. Different Types of Connection Dialup Connection.
