The RUconnection Card Understanding the RUconnection Card What is the RUconnection Card? The RUconnection Card is the official identification card of Rutgers University. It was implemented in 1998, to consolidate other cards then being issued. Cards can be used on any campus to provide access to similar facilities and services. Card issuing offices follow standardized policy and procedures. What does it do? It provides a means of visual identification. It can be used to control authorized access to facilities and services: Housing and building access Recreation Centers Computer labs Library borrowing privileges Meal plans RU Express debit funds Time clock Parking (Newark) Who can get one? Anyone with an official affiliation with the University, based on primary status: Faculty/Staff Students University guests Retirees Other special groups Where can they be obtained? UHR – Faculty/Staff/Visitors/Retirees Housing/Dining – Students Newark and Camden have integrated offices issuing both types of cards How does it work? The card incorporates several technologies: Visual Information: Name – as it appears in Payroll/SRDB (Student Records Database) All uppercase, no nicknames, no punctuation other than comma Photo – required for all ID cards issued Signature – electronic or manual RUID Number, if student School/Department/Campus Primary status within University community Validation info – issue/expiration date Graduation year and program for students End of current appointment period for faculty/staff Magnetic stripe encoded with ID number and revision level Interfaces with Blackboard and other electronic transaction systems Revision number prevents previous cards from being used Each card issued is unique for security Used for almost all functions of card Barcode Used by Libraries for borrowing privileges Security is ensured by changing number when replacing lost card Where does the data come from?
