The Sensor Network Data Transmission Protocol (SNDT) Fengxian Fan, Yihua Xie, Edoardo Biagioni 1. Introduction 1.1 Goals The idea of the SNDT protocol comes from the Pods project. The Pods network is an ad-hoc wireless sensor network which is built for monitoring endangered plant species in Hawaii. Various types of weather data and network management data are collected periodically by each node in the wireless sensor network, and then transferred to special nodes which are called base stations and are connected to the Internet. The methods we have used so far to do the data transmission are either inconvenient or produce too much overhead and are not scalable. Our motivation in designing this protocol is to improve the efficiency of the data transmission process. We try to make this protocol as general as possible for data transmission over ad-hoc wireless sensor networks. We are also concerned about the security, reliability and efficiency of data transmission. 1.2 Model of the System The network consists of multiple communication nodes. Some of these nodes, called base stations, are the nodes to which sensor data is transmitted. The system adopts a client-server model, in which servers run on the base stations and receive data, and clients run on sensor nodes and send data to the servers. The servers also provide configuration information to the clients. There could be one or more base stations available on the network. Our assumption is that each client is initially configured with the IP address of at least one base station. With multi servers o send data to. If a client has no knowledge about servers when it is generated, 1.3 Layering This protocol is designed for the application layer and runs on top of the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). We define 999 as port number for both clients and servers, so that all data and configuration information is sent from and to UDP port 999. 1.4 Security Concerns We are using encryption and authentication for every me
