A good design of topic sentence is half the battle. --Websters New World Dictionary (p. 1410) When writing a topic sentence, you must bear three points in mind: 1.?The topic sentence must be a complete sentence, e.g. - The process of learning is essential to our lives. - The British attitude towards food is quite different from ours. 2. The topic sentence is made up of two parts: the topic and the controlling ideas, e.g. - Instant noodles are easy to cook. - Alcoholic beverages should be banned from college campuses, for two reasons. 3. The topic sentence should be neither too general nor too specific, e.g. - American food is terrible. (too general) - American food is tasteless and greasy because Americans use too many canned, frozen, and packaged foods and because everything is fried in oil or butter. (too specific) - American food is tasteless and greasy for two reasons. (suitable) Once you have limited your subject by writing a good topic sentence, you must next develop that subject by writing supporting sentences. 1 You may use examples, details, anecdotes, facts and statistics, arranged through enumeration, comparison or contrast. 2 Remember the supporting sentences must be relevant to the topic announced in the topic sentence. 3 Paragraph development There are said to be many methods of paragraph development: details definition examples explanation comparison reasons repetition analogy There were several reasons why I decided to attend Bingston University.
