Journal of Criminal Justice 47 (2016) 100–107 Contents lists available at ScienceDirect Journal of Criminal Justice Re?ected appraisals and self-view in delinquency development: An analysis of retrospective accounts from members of the Racine birth cohorts Glenn D. Walters Department of Criminal Justice, Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA 19530-0730, United States article info Article history: Received 27 June 2016 Received in revised form 15 July 2016 Accepted 15 July 2016 Available online 17 August 2016 Keywords: Re?ected appraisals Self-view Cross-lag Mediation analysis abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether re?ected appraisals of delinquency from parents and friends preceded a delinquent self-view in participants reporting adult criminality. Methods: Retrospective accounts of re?ected appraisals of delinquency, a delinquent self-view, and adult offending were examined in 791 participants from the original 1942 and 1949 Racine cohorts. Results: Mediation analysis revealed the presence of a signi?cant target pathway from re?ected appraisals at age 14–17 to self-view at age 18–20 to adult offending at age 21+. The control pathway, which ran from self-view at age 14–17 to re?ected appraisals at age 18–20 to adult offending at age 21+ was not signi?cant. The Preacher– Hayes contrast test revealed a signi?cant difference between the two pathways. Conclusions: Consistent with the hypothesis tested in this study, the current results suggest that re?ected appraisals of delinquency from others lay the groundwork for an individuals own view of themselves as delinquent. ? 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Walters (in press-c) has proposed a theory of crime in which two overlapping processes take center stage. One process involves a series of pathways that give rise to the control model of criminal lifestyle development and the other process involves a series of pathways that give rise to the moral model of criminal lifestyle development. Each mode
