Macfarlane DAMTP, Cambridge University, SilverStreet, Cambridge CB3 9EW,, UK Received 12 October 1994; accepted 12 December 1994 Abstract This paper shows that (anisotropic) spin chains of XY type arise by matrix representation of the fermionic terms of hamiltonians of quantum systems whose supersymmetry involves in general no more than a single hermitian supercharge. It provides some background relevant to this type of supersymmetry and makes applications to such chains including those which admit quantum groups as invariance algebras. 1. Introduction This paper discusses some aspects of certain spin chains which arise by the matrix representation of the fermionic portion of supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. It has been known for some time [1] that spin- 1 XX spin chains, possibly in the presence of applied magnetic fields, arise in such a way in N = 1 supersymmetric quantum mechanics [2-5]. More recent work [6-8] on XX spin chains, with suitably chosen applied fields, has shown that these chains admit as an invariance algebra a one-parameter deformation of the superalgebra sl(1 I1). This interesting result has been extended further [9] to show that an XY spin chain (XY usually implies anisotropy here), again with suitably chosen applied fields, admits as an invariance algebra a two-parameter deformation of sl(1 I1). This prompts us to ask and answer the obvious question as to what supersymmetric quantum systems possess such XY spin chains as their fermionic parts. In fact the systems are ones which possess supersymmetry no more general than that which has been called N =31 supersymmetry and discussed so far almost exclusively in the context of two-dimensional quantum field theory [10,11]. This paper develops N = ~1 supersymmetry at the level of supersymmetric quantum mechanics with particular 0
