2015届二轮 阅读表达专题1(四川专用)
1. Dr. Frank Mayfield was touring the Tewksbury Institute when he met an elderly floor maid. Having known that the elderly woman had worked there for many years, he asked her to tell him about the story of that place.
“I can tell you nothing, but I can show you something,” said she, leading him down to the basement under the oldest part of the building and that’s where they used to keep Annie.
The floor maid said, “Annie was a young girl, who was brought in here because nobody could do anything with her. She would bite, scream and throw her food at people. The doctors and nurses couldn’t even examine her. I used to think I would hate to be locked up like that surely. I wanted to help her, but I didn’t have any idea what I could do. So I just baked (烤) her some cakes one night after work and brought them to her the next day. I walked carefully to her cage, and I got out of there quickly because I thought she might throw them at me. But she didn’t. She actually took the cakes and ate them. After that, she was just a little bit nicer to me. Once I even made her laugh. One of the nurses noticed that and she told the doctors. They asked me if I would help them with Annie. I said I would if I could. So that was how it came about that every time they wanted to see Annie or examine her, I went into the cage first and explained and calmed her down.”
The poor little Annie is Annie Sullivan, who has ever helped Helen Keller. When Helen Keller received the Nobel Prize, she was asked who had the greatest influence on her life and she said, “Annie Sullivan.” But Annie said, “No, Helen. The woman who had the greatest influence on both of our lives was the floor maid.”
1. What did Dr. Frank Mayfield want to know from the floor maid? (No more than 7 words)
