Cupid and Psyche PPT A401 第七组

Cupid -- the son of Mercury and Venus. Cupid is the ancient Roman god of love in all its varieties, identified with the Greek Eros. He was usually represented as a winged infant who carried a bow and quiver of arrows. He was also sometimes depicted as a beautiful youth. Psyche was a mortal Princess, renowned for her great beauty and her name means breath or soul. She was so beautiful that people began to neglect the worship of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus was very jealous, and asked her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a horrible monster. The oracle of Apollo “The virgin is destined for the bride of no mortal lover. Her future husband awaits her on the top of the mountain. He is a monster whom neither gods nor men can resist.” The wedding of Psyche - by Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1895) (Procession accompanying Psyche as she goes to marry the monster) . Because of the oracle of Apollo, all people filled with dismay and at last the parents left her alone on the summit of the mountain with sorrow. Part1:Falling in love When Cupid saw how beautiful Psyche was, he dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself, and fell in love with her. Part2:Suspicion of psyche Psyche’s sisiter said, the Pythian oracle that declared you destined to marry a direful and tremendous monster. When her sisters were gone, their words and her own curiosity were too strong for her to resist. When Cupid had fallen into his first sleep, she brought out her lamp, finding him a beautiful youth. After Cupid left…… Psyche roamed about looking for her husband. The holy Ceres found her so religiously employed, she told Psyche the way to the temple of Venus. She said: Go, then, try by modesty and submission to win her forgiveness. Venus was so angry, so she set various tasks for Psyche. The first trail is that she ordered Psyche to be led to the storehouse of her temple and separate all these grains before evening. The second task: To find sheep fee
