Cupid-- the son of Mercury and Venus. Cupid is the ancient Roman god of love in all its varieties, identified with the Greek Eros. He was usually represented as a winged infant who carried a bow and quiver of arrows. He was also sometimes depicted as a beautiful youth. Psyche was a mortal Princess, renowned for her great beauty and her name means breath or soul. She was so beautiful that people began to neglect the worship of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus was very jealous, and asked her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a horrible monster. The oracle of Apollo “The virgin is destined for the bride of no mortal lover. Her future husband awaits her on the top of the mountain.
