His mother Negin Bhatt was a teacher. He was born in Bombay (now known as Mumbai 孟买), India, into a family of Kashmiri descent. He was educated at Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, Rugby School, and Kings College, Cambridge, where he studied history.
