Slang and Idioms What are slang and Idioms? Slang: a type of language that has words and phrases that are informal, or words that are not actually in the dictionary; they are more common in speech than writing, and often vary between different groups of people. Idiom: is a phrase where the words together have a meaning that is different from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. Common Idioms It is raining cats and dogs Kick the can To eat someone/something for breakfast Fish for compliments No use crying over spilt milk If push comes to shove Add fuel to the fire Common Idioms Time to face the music Go all-out All set A little bird told me Armed to the teeth Break a leg About time! Common Idioms On the other hand Speaks volumes Run into Stick with Work out Took place (on/in/at) Slang “cha”/“ta”/“a”: in speech, used to shorten two words that often end in “to” or “you”. Examples: gotcha, don’tcha, wanna, haveta, gonna, shoulda (have). Ain’t (Am not/Are not/Is not; used as present tense) Airhead: stupid person. Bent: angry/upset. Bonkers: crazy. Bummer: disappointing. Beat/Spent: (I’m beat.): very tired. Blown Away: very impressed, amazed. Bread, Dough, Green Backs, Bucks, Cash: $: money. Bad (Badass): really good, impressive. Slang Booze: alcohol. Catch some rays: be in the sun. Catch some Z’s: get some sleep. Cheesy/Corny: lame, not cool/good, cheap. Chicken: coward/not brave. Couch Potato: lazy person. Croak: die. Damage: cost. Dead: quiet, not busy. Drag: boring, not fun. Flaky: unreliable. Flick: movie. Fox: very beautiful, often a woman, is informal, crude. Gourd: head. Grand: $1,000. Grub: food. Guts: courage. Buzz: slightly intoxicated/drunk. A Hit: successful Slang In the Bag: settled, successful. Just off the Boat: na?ve, not wise. Knock It: criticize or judge. Knocked Up: pregnant. Laid Back: calm and relaxed. Make Waves: cause trouble, impact. Mellow Out: slow down, relax. No Sweat: no problem. Pain in the Neck: annoying, a hassle. Pi
