Plant Your Life By Jackie Muha And Michelle Isgut How This Idea Came About… Goals Increase the residents’ awareness on environmental issues Introduce the residents to ways of sustaining their area and the environment Give the residents an opportunity to make something to decorate their rooms Environmentalist Groups Environmental Action Group Office of Sustainability Ad Hoc Sustainability Committee Gators for a Sustainable Campus Find and organize speakers “Green Team” for game days Environmental Chairs within larger organizations Ex) UF’s RHA has a Sustainability Chair Outside speakers from your city Discussion What environmental programs/groups do you have at your school? What environmental concerns does our country face? Environmental Concerns Global Warming Pollution Energy/water Conservation Recycling Nitrogen Pollution Water Pollution THE EVENT… Speakers Contact an organization about speaking in your residence hall about the major issues dealing with our environment Have the organization speak for about 20 minutes Ask for pamphlets (i.e. The Green Guide), or other promotional items (i.e. lightbulbs) NOW COMES THE FUN PART… Activity Set up tables in the back of the room for at least 20 people Set up a materials table containing the pots, water dish, soil and mini shovel, seeds, and fertilizer (in that order) Activity Cont. Each resident will get one pot, water dish, scoop of soil, seed, and scoop of fertilizer from the materials table The residents will then proceed to the work tables and begin potting their seeds When they are done, they will receive a mini watering can and a how-to-care-for-your-plant card Aren’t we forgetting something that all residents love to see at events?FOOD! DIRT The classic dessert you had as a kid Mixture of pudding, crushed Oreos, and gummy worms WHY? It’s delicious!
