234 Intercultural Communication Studies XX: 1 (2011) Xu dai Regaining the Sense of Being a Shanghainese: A Study of the Revival of Art Deco as an Apparatus of Cultural Memory from an Intercultural Perspective Xu Lingna dAi Zeyu Shanghai International Studies University, China Abstract Art Deco, an artistic form originating from Europe yet flourishing in America, functioned as the symbol of Shanghai modernism (摩登) when it was introduced into Shanghai in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Its wide application in skyscrapers catapulted it into the aesthetic representative of modernity. As the most representative of the Art Deco style, buildings such as Paramount, Sassoon House and the Peace Hotel have become the extension of the identity of Shanghai people. This Art Deco style of architecture in the region on the one hand emits an exotic feeling, and on the other hand, helps to construct the identity of Shanghai people under the impact of globalization. The café, cigar and fashion that were popular seventy years ago have nowadays regained popularity among young people. Among such trends, Art Deco is welcomed by the architects as a way to recall the 1930’s Shanghai. This is evidenced in the advertisement of 353 Plaza, Yangtze Hotel and Peninsula Hotel. This paper explores the strengthening of local consciousness and the reconstruction of local identity in the context of the characteristics of the consumer culture of contemporary Shanghai.
