I am a consultant in HP’s Consulting business in an area called Extended Manufacturing. My career at HP has spanned the last 3 decades primarily in a manufacturing environment. I have managed several large production operations in assembly and test over the years at both the product level and at the printed circuit board level. For cost competitiveness reasons, HP embarked on a strategy to outsource many of its production operations. I was one of the people responsible for implementing this outsourcing strategy. Consequently, I was intimately involved in the development of a supply chain for HP that has the following characteristics: low cost, high quality, quick responsiveness and assurance of supply. So my background is one of hands-on experience. Today I want to talk about supply chain management from a specific context. Supply Chain Management is a business strategy that is getting a lot of coverage both in the business press and other media, today. However, Supply Chain Management is really only a means to an end.
