MSC.Nastran 120 Exercise Workbook 21-1 WORKSHOP 21 Static Analysis of A Coffee Cup Objectives: ■ Model the geometry of the coffee cup using the given dimensions. ■ Input hydrostatic loading conditions by applying a spatial field using a PCL function. ■ Submit the job to MSC.Nastran for analysis. ■ Review the results from the analysis. 21-2 MSC.Nastran 120 Exercise Workbook WORKSHOP 21 Static Analysis of a Coffee Cup MSC.Nastran 120 Exercise Workbook 21-3 Model Description: Figure 21.1 shows the dimensions for a coffee cup which will be constructed as a 2D plate model in MSC.Patran. Because the geometry, loads, and boundary conditions are axisymmetric, only 1/8th of the cup will be modeled. In addition, a geometry model will be created using a cylindrical coordinate system, and meshed with 2D elements. The model will have symmetric boundary conditions applied, as well as a constraint on the lower edge of the cup in TZ. The model will be subjected to a hydrostatic load, where the pressure acts normal to the surface of the plate elements with a value of zero at the surface of the fluid, and linearly approaches a maximum value at the bottom of the cup. To model this load distribution, a PCL function will be used to create a spatial field and define a pressure load. Finally, the model will be submitted to MSC.Nastran for analysis.
