Abstract
William Makepeace Thackeray is one of the representatives of the English critical realistic writers. Vanity Fair is regarded as his masterpiece. It follows the fortunes of two contrasting but inter-linked lives, through two women characters,Becky and Amelia .Through describing the different lives of Becky and Amelia in happy times and sorrowful days, the writer examines the position and role of women in a money-oriented and status-conscious male wok, attacks a corrupted and hypocritical society.
Through the interpretation of Becky and Amelia in Vanity Fair, This thesis is devoted to a reinterpret of Becky in Vanity Fair from a feminist critical perspective to explore Thackeray’s attitude about Becky and Amelia,with a focus on the reasons for and sources of Thackeray’s sympathy with women in general and an analysis of two female characters Becky and Amelia. He deeply shows that the lives of the women in hypocritical society.
Through creating the two characters,Victorious rebellious woman Becky and the “Angel in the house” in Vanity Fair, the writer shows the deep sympathy for the women. In 1949 Beauvoir said woman is not innate ,but rather cultivated later.This subverts the philosophy of male domination. The author holds that Thackeray’s sympathy with women displaying in
