Abstract: This study intends to examine the problem that non-English major students who have low motivation. Self-report data were collected from 30 non-English major students selected randomly in Yunnan Normal University by using a closed-ended questionnaire. Qualitative results came from interviews with 4 students. Findings provide evidence that some problems, which influence students’ motivation. Meanwhile, intrinsic motivation can be boosted if the factors of interests, goal, attitude, self-confidence, self-determination, learning environment, learning strategies, and teaching methods are valued by teachers. Ⅱ. Introduction: The problem of non-English major students who have low motivation always haunts university English teachers in China. A lot of non-English major students just study for scores or passing CET 4 and CET 6 without a high motivation in learning English. Many university teachers will complaints there is not much response from their students in a class. No matter how hard you try, no one can be positive. The students always sleep or play cell phones so that they can not follow the teacher and get low scores in exams. Some of them seem to have no interest in English and have a weak foundation. Some of them complaint the learning environment is too bad to learn English. Some of them have a feeling that their English teachers’ teaching methods are so inflexible that the class are too boring to listen. Thus, there are some problems in non-English major students learning English and it is worth the teachers’ special attention to changing this situation. So my purpose of this study is to investigate these problems, hoping to find some ways to solve the problems by improving non-English major students’ motivation.
