A detailed analysis about the errors of Chinglish vocabulary Introduction “Once, a Chinese man showed his foreign friends a photo of his wife. While hearing them praising her for her beauty, he answered, ‘Where, where.’ All the foreign friends were taken aback. Then the most ingenious said, ‘Oh, everywhere!’” [1] This is a delicate and funny example of Chinglish. In this situation, a westerner would likely have said, “Thank you,” probably adding, “I think she is quite pretty.” However, the “Where, where” is a Chinese polite way of speech which is a literal translation of “哪里,哪里”. The word “chinglish” looks interesting. It is formed from the words “Chinese” and “English” using the word formation – blending. The word “Chinglish” itself can show that it is the outcome of the combination of Chinese and English. “Chinglish is a kind of deformed English which is not compliance with English linguistic requirements and cultural customs. It is created by Chinese people under the influence of Chinese syntax and grammar, Chinese way of thinking and Chinese cultural background.”[2] “Up to now, there are several other similar deformed English languages such as: Hinglish, Japglish, Frenglish, Spanglish and so on.”[3] Due to mother-tongue interferences, when Chinese people want to speak or write something in English, they think about the Chinese version first, and then just translate it into English word by word. As a result, Chinglish has a lot of mistakes on pronunciation, vocabulary, syntax and discourse. This paper offers a detail analysis about the errors of Chinglish vocabulary. I Redundancy and deficiency In Chinglish, there are many sentences in which some words are redundant while some words are missed. The number and order of the words in Chinese and English sentences are usually not completely the same.
