A detailed analysis about the errors of Chinglish vocabulary
Introduction
“Once, a Chinese man showed his foreign friends a photo of his wife. While hearing them praising her for her beauty, he answered, ‘Where, where.’ All the foreign friends were taken aback. Then the most ingenious said, ‘Oh, everywhere!’” [1] This is a delicate and funny example of Chinglish. In this situation, a westerner would likely have said, “Thank you,” probably adding, “I think she is quite pretty.” However, the “Where, where” is a Chinese polite way of speech which is a literal translation of “哪里,哪里”.
